Investigate Like OCCRP: Follow the Money and Uncover War Crimes, a school run by OCCRP and Slidstvo.Info, is a practical intensive course for beginners in investigative journalism on war crimes and crimes of abuse in the reconstruction process.

To participate in the School, you need to fill out an application form by the link by 17 September 2023. The school is only for Ukrainian participants.

A group of participants (30 people) is formed on a competitive basis. The Selection Committee may invite individual candidates to a short online interview to better evaluate the application form.

The selection result will be announced by 20 September 2023. The organisers reserve the right to inform only the selected participants of the result and not to explain the reasons for this decision.

The school consists of several stages:

1) five-day training, during which 30 participants will learn the basics of investigative journalism: hypothesis development, standards and ethics, legal framework and risk minimisation, interviewing subjects and protagonists, OSINT, searching and verifying information in state registers, databases, aggregators and services, analysing financial statements, and storytelling.

The lecturers of the School are as follows: Anna Babinets, the executive director of Slidstvo.Info and regional editor of OCCRP; Liudmyla Pankratova and Oksana Maksymeniuk, lawyers from the Institute for Regional Press Development; Yevheniia Motorevska, the head of the war crimes investigation department at The Kyiv Independent; Maksym Savchuk and Heorhii Shabaiev, investigative journalists from the Schemes: Corruption in Detail programme; Anatolii Ostapenko, OSINT investigator at Toronto Television; Antonina Volkotrub, a board member of the Anti-Corruption Action Centre; Yurii Nikolov, co-founder and editor of Nashi Hroshi; and investigative journalists from Slidstvo.Info, Yanina Kornienko, and Inna Biletska, the editor-in-chief of the Investigations Department at Suspilne TV.

Participation in the training is free of charge. Accommodation in Kyiv and travel expenses for participants from other cities will be provided by the organisers. Meals are also provided during the training.

2) Paid internships for 10 selected participants in editorial offices to work on investigative stories. The duration of the internship is determined individually and lasts from 3 to 8 months.

Selected participants will receive a monthly stipend of $800 from OCCRP throughout the internship.

The choice of the internship newsroom depends on the topics of investigative journalism proposed during the pitching (1 October 2023) and the corresponding agreement between the participants and media representatives.

3) A series of trainings and workshops from OCCRP editors and reporters that will be held monthly for all School participants.

4) Specialised online trainings, workshops and individual consultations at the request of the School participants. Each month, participants will fill out a questionnaire in which they can request a training or individual consultation.
