A Prison of Opportunities

‘A Prison of Opportunities’ is an investigative documentary about corruption behind bars. It also explores how the state creates the illusion of security and justice.

In pre-trial detention centres, defendants are required to remain in their cells almost round the clock whilst awaiting their court verdict. This is supposed to be the case to protect victims and witnesses of crime. And at the same time — to preserve our peace of mind. But does it actually work?

In the Ukrainian reality, some await the court’s decision in inhumane conditions — with mould, beatings and extortion. Others, however, lead a perfectly comfortable life – with alcohol, mobile phones, the internet and private dentists. And most importantly – they have access to freedom, communication with their families and, likely, even with their accomplices.

Who has access to such privileges and how is this possible? The film ‘Prison of Opportunities’ answers precisely these questions.
