Viktoria. The Tragedy of Emptiness

A tragic story about corruption that kills. A fire broke out at the newly opened ‘Viktoria’ children’s camp (Odesa), in which three children lost their lives. A year after the tragedy, the only person to receive a sentence was a camp supervisor who was formally responsible for fire safety at the camp, but who had already been dismissed by the time of the tragedy. As journalists discovered during their own lengthy investigation, the fire spread very quickly due to numerous violations during the construction of the ‘Viktoria’ buildings. Consequently, local officials who allowed the camp to operate must also bear responsibility for the tragedy. The chain of corruption that led to the children’s deaths points to the Mayor of Odesa, Hennadii Trukhanov, and his inner circle.
